Learn Your ABC’s of Orthodontics

Carlyn Phucas Orthodontics in Marlton and Turnersville NJ explains the ABC's of orthodontic treatment We know that with the new year beginning, now is the best time to learn what some call the “ABC’s of Orthodontics.” Simply put, “A” is for age, “B” is for braces types, and “C” is for cost and/or choice. Using this approach makes dealing with orthodontics a whole lot easier.

Age is an important factor when it comes to orthodontics for children. Orthodontists usually agree that it is best to wait until a child has all of his or her permanent teeth before implementing any kind of orthodontic procedures. Furthermore, an evaluation of a child’s teeth by age 7 can prevent problems in the future.

Some of these problems can prove to be more difficult to resolve as a child grows older. Orthodontic evaluations are usually complimentary and do not require any kind of referral from a dentist. It’s best to have an evaluation during the summer time so that if braces are required the initial process will not interfere with their schooling.

Blown Away by Bad Breath

Bad Breath and Halitosis by Carlyn Phucas Orthodontics in Marlton and Turnersville NJ At Carlyn Phucas Orthodontics, we understand that bad breath can be a big turn off for most people, especially those that are image-conscious. It is also very annoying for people who deal with the problem.

  • How can you tell if you have bad breath?
  • What is the cause of bad breath
  • Is there any way to prevent it?

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a term used to describe the noticeable bad odors exhaled when breathing. It is difficult to notice yourself, and embarrassing if you experience other people’s reactions. They may back away slightly when you start to speak or change expressions when the two of you are standing and talking face to face. If you are lucky, a friend or family member will let you know if you have bad breath before you are offensive to others.

Do You Know What to Look for When Buying a Toothbrush?

What type of toothbrush to buy

There are many different types of toothbrushes to choose from and each brush has a different type of bristle! When buying a toothbrush, everyone here at Carlyn Phucas Orthodontics thinks you should know the bristles are your number one priority… then consider color, shape, and all the whistles and bells manufacturers use to lure you to buy their product.

There are generally three different types of bristles: hard, medium, and soft. We always recommend our patients, especially children and seniors, use a soft bristled toothbrush. This is true for a hand held as well as an electric toothbrush.

Why? Because using a hard and medium bristled brush can cause problems with your teeth and gums. If the bristles are too hard, they can wear away the enamel on your teeth and irritate the gums so they become red and sore. Over time, the wrong bristle can even cause your gums to recede.
